China’s production capacity of spandex, a synthetic fibre known for its exceptional elasticity, has grown rapidly in the last two years and it now exceeds the domestic demand.

China’s spandex production capacity has grown at an average annual rate of 15 percent to reach 500,000 tons/year over the past two years. In comparison, the domestic demand for spandex is only about 400,000 tons/year. Thus, there is an oversupply of nearly 20 percent.

This has resulted in a decline in the price of spandex by as much as 55 percent from 100,000 yuan/ton to 45,000 yuan/ton during the last three years.
