Iran’s petrochemical production capacity grew by 7 million tons or 13.2 percent to 60 million tons during the Iranian calendar year 2012-13 that ended on March 20, 2013.

The increase in Iran’s petrochemical capacity was due to the launch of new petrochemical projects, presstv.ir reported.

Out of the 37.3 million tons of petrochemical products produced by the country during the first 11 months of the last calendar year, 14.5 million tons of products worth US$ 10.2 billion were exported, it added.

Iran exports its petrochemical products to over 60 countries, including countries in Central Asia, Far East, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Over the past few years, Iran has greatly enhanced its range and production of petrochemical items.

Last month, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and Managing Director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Abdolhossein Bayat said the country’s petrochemical output is likely to reach 100 million tons by 2015.

He had said that Iran is in talks with several countries to grab export orders for its new petrochemical products.

Earlier, while unveiling the plan for setting up three new petrochemical hubs in the country in near term, Mr. Bayat said these projects would help the country grow into the largest petrochemical producer in the Middle East.

Next to Saudi Arabia, NPC is the second biggest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in Middle East.
