Tongsuh Petrochemical, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan’s Asahi Kasei Corporation, is planning to undertake maintenance activities at both of its currently operational acrylonitrile (ACN) lines.

“The No. 4 ACN line will be shut for maintenance for around one month in early May 2015, and the N0. 3 line will be shut in early October 2015, also for one month,” a company official told fibre2fashion.

“At present, both the No. 3 and No. 4 lines are operating at 90 per cent capacity rates,” the official added.

Tongsuh owns three ACN lines at Ulsan in South Korea. The third line, i.e. No. 2 ACN line was shutdown in March 2014. When enquired about the same, the official said, “We have not yet planned about restarting the ACN line, and it will depend on future market conditions.”

While the No. 2 ACN line has a capacity of 70,000 tons per year, the No. and No. 4 lines have capacities of 245,000 tons per year each.

Established in 1969, Tongsuh Petrochemical Corp., Ltd. became South Korea’s first company to produce ACN. The company has contributed greatly to the development of Korea’s petrochemical industry.

Acrylonitrile is the key ingredient in acrylic fibers used to make clothing.
