The project of one million tons ethylene per year between Sinopec in Tianjin and Zhenhai already started construction in 2006, and is expected to be operational by the end of 2008.
The project of one million tons ethylene per year by Xinjiang Dushanzi Petrochemical Company of China Petroleum will be put into operation in the second half of 2008.
The expansion project of 800,000 tons ethylene by Fushun Petrochemical Corporation of China Petroleum will increase its annual capacity from nearly 20 million tons to 100 million tons.
In addition, the project of 800,000 tons ethylene per year between China Petroleum and Chengdu petrochemical company in Sichuan has also entered an implementation stage.
Other proposed projects include a refinery of 10 million tons per year and a plant of one million tons ethylene per year to be built in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park of Caojing, Shanghai.
Saudi Sabic Company plans to set up a joint venture with Chinese Dalian Shide Group, for an ethylene plant of one million tons per year, but is still awaiting approval of the Chinese Government.
The above mentioned identified expansion projects will increase China's ethylene capacity by over 5 million tons per year. By 2009, China's ethylene production size at average will reach 656,600 tons per year.
Industry experts believe that it is feasible for China to build ethylene plant scale of 1.3 million - 1.5 million tons per year in the future. New ethylene plant size should be averaged at 800,000 -1.3 million tons per year, so as to effectively improve China's international competitiveness.
