China's ethylene production is expected to exceed 10 million tons this year. The next few years will be a fast growing period for the industry. However, high oil prices have reduced the industry's profits and increasingly scarce oil resources will constrain the development of the industry.
Presently, China has 18 large petrochemical enterprises with 100,000 tons of annual ethylene output, 14 firms with over 200,000 tons of annual output, and 10 firms with more than 500,000 tons of annual output.
Country's ethylene production is mainly concentrated in China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and PetroChina Company. Last year, ethylene production of Sinopec reached 6.331 million tons, accounting for 67.3 percent of china's total output and the production of PetroChina marked 2.0679 million tons, accounting for 22 percent of the national total output.
From January to September this year, China's total ethylene production reached over 7.78 million tons, up 14.7 percent over the same time last year. It is estimated that the total annual ethylene production will see an increase of 11 percent over the previous year.
