Ethylene production in China reached 9.6 million tons last year; the output is likely to exceed 10 million tons this year. But, it is regrettable that the core technologies and equipments still have to rely on imports.

The 800,000 tons of ethylene project in Wuhan city started construction yesterday. Young experts from chemical industry gathered at the Wuhan Engineering University to initiate a heated discussion over the project.

Professor Wu Tian Xin, Party secretary of engineering division and also a renowned expert of China's chemical industry, said, all the basic techniques and equipments of the 800,000 tons ethylene project were introduced from abroad.

Sun Hongwei, director of Chemical Science Division of National Natural Science Foundation straightly expressed that the basic research f China's chemical industry was weak. High-level research results were less; introduction of digested technologies was relatively larger, while innovative technologies were poor.

According to the introduction of Gao Jinsen from the national heavy oil key Laboratory of China Petrochemical University, in the development of ethylene industry, China has followed the way of introduction, digestion and absorption of foreign technologies since late 1970s.

It is learned that the proportion of domestic made major petrochemical equipments is currently less than 10 percent. Therefore, China's petrochemical industry has tremendous work to carry out in the future.
