An official release from the Thailand Textile Institute shows that the country imported raw materials worth US $780.2 million for local production in the first quarter of 2008, representing a year on year rise of 25.3 percent.

Of the total, the import of yarn and fibre amounted to $407.7 million while fabric added up to $372.5 million, posting an annual rise of 30.4 and 20.1 percent respectively.

China, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, US and Asian countries were some of the key suppliers to Thailand.

Although, imports have increased it is hoped that the finished products will fetch more revenues through exports and domestic sales than the expenditure made on purchasing these raw materials.
