To boost its earnings, state-owned Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) has resumed production of caprolactam (CPL) after a gap of four years. CPL is an intermediate primarily used in the production of nylon 6 fibres, tyre cord, textile fibres and resins. The demand for CPL in the domestic market is high, estimated at 1,30,000 tonne.

FACT's CPL plant has a capacity to produce 50,000 tonne. This quantity is produced using the available intermediate products, namely, Hyam and Anone.

The first phase of CPL production has commenced and would be over in 25 days, FACT CMD Jaiveer Srivastava said at a press conference. The revenues from it would help improve the company's financials and achieve operating profits by the end of this fiscal.

FACT also has plans to produce nylon chips, which has huge demand from textile units.

Besides FACT, CPL is also produced by the Gujarat State Fertilizer Company (GSFC), which has capacity to produce 70,000 tonne. (RKS)
