European Union announces that the European Commission on Wednesday disclosed policy to locate a European Institute of Technology (EIT) with the aim of rivaling top academic institutions in the US.

According to the plans, the institute should be made up of a "light-weight central governing body," represented by top scientists and business leaders, and up to ten "knowledge communities."

These communities would pull together students, researchers and companies working on different research projects, mainly in the area of energy and environment, information society and nanotechnology.

It is set to take the form of a virtual body overlooking projects in several existing research units across Europe, rather than concentrating its activities in one center.
