The independent industry textile standard In response to consumers, who are more aware of sustainable production and harmful substances in textiles than ever, bluesign technologies ag has developed the bluesign standard.
Unlike an eco label, the bluesign standard addresses not only consumer safety aspects, but covers the complete range of environment, health and safety (EHS) issues within the whole textile production chain, namely air emission, water emission, occupational health and resource management. With a particular focus on “Best Available Technology” the resource consumption can significantly be reduced within the complete textile supply chain, which amongst others ultimately contributes to reduced global warming.
bluesign technologies ag has recognised the upcoming and introduction of several “Restricted Substances Lists” (RSL's) and certificate labels trying to attempt mostly retailer's and consumer's concerns regarding environmental health and safety issues. However, these lists and labels only focus on substances, which should not be evident in textiles and clothing.
The bluesign standard follows an opposing principle, i.e. it certifies chemical formulations and compounds that have been rigorously tested against harmful effects on human beings and negative environmental impacts.
At the same time it also optimises consumption of the relevant resources water, energy and raw materials. It is a holistic approach towards the effective management of relevant resources within each single textile process of the supply chain, from fibre production to retail, from consumer until disposal.
