It's a moment of glory for the IIT's Department of Textile Technology as the research team has developed a 'Phase Change Material' (PCM).

Tiny salt like grains, the materials, when coated on fabrics, emit warmth in winter and absorb heat in summer.

This could offer perfect clothing in the extreme climates.

The application of PCM coated fibre for the fighter pilots clothing will be one of its significant applications. Such suits defy the gravitational force and can withstand extreme temperatures.

In a proposed project, IIT has tied-up with the Defense Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bangalore.

The department approached the Applied Mechanics department to develop PCM coated helmets.

The PCM coating of the fabric makes it heavier by a few grams and the material is cost-effective. Different industries can use the product for different utilities.

The institution is also working to avail this product commercially.
