The new Cotton CRC has five main program themes or areas of focus and activity: The Farm; The Catchment; The Communities: the End Product and Adoption of Research Results.
Mr Anthony stated the new Cotton CRC's focus would involve:
- Continued emphasis on Integrated Pest Management (insects, weeds and diseases) to deliver more robust and lower-cost crop management and protection programs
- Continuing efficiencies in water use for irrigation – with Australia leading the world in cotton produced per megalitre of water used
- Greater adoption of precision farming techniques
- Enhanced fibre characteristics through the growing and processing chain helping the industry create a world-renowned brand for Australian cotton
- Higher yields through continued adoption of best management practices and utilisation of knowledge and resources
- Improved efficiency in the delivery of allocated water for irrigation
- Improved river health through best management practices
- Improved catchment management in relation to groundwater, salinity prevention, native vegetation and biodiversity
- Establishment of robust indicators of farm and catchment natural resource health
- Greater understanding of the role of cotton production in regional economies
- Development of programs to assist the prosperity of cotton-oriented regional businesses
