Russian leather tannery company Ryazan Tannery has become a SATRA Member quoting SATRA's modern global network as a key factor in joining. SATRA is the world's leading research and technology organisation for consumer goods industries.

Ryazan is the No. 1 leather supplier in Russia for tanning industry.

Ryazan's Quality Director, Alexander Suvorov, explains that their quality is well established, but you can't succeed on quality alone. Also need to know which companies and areas need good leather, how they want it and when. They feel SATRA will help us in gaining better worldwide integration.

The tannery is located in the city of Ryazan (180 km. southeast of Moscow) and was first established in 1916. After Mikhail Gorbachev introduced perestroika (restructuring) to Russia, a new tannery was built in 1988 using Italian technical support.

Ryazan is now the largest tannery in Europe, employing over 2,000 staff and producing different types of finished leather, crust, wet-white and wet-blue hides - the soaking volume of raw hides, mainly of Russian origin, is 5,000 tons per month. The company supplies garment, upholstery and automobile leathers, though the manufacture of footwear leather is its main direction.

80 percent of product is exported to Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, France) and Asia (India, Pakistan, Vietnam, China). Overall sales were up 37% in 2004 with clear profit up 112%. The management team is looking to increasethe sale of finished leather worldwide, currently over 20% total production to the Russian local market.
