The textile value chain is the topmost priority in Pakistan’s annual budget for 2018-19, commerce minister Pervaiz Malik told a global conference in Lahore recently. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would further boost the country’s economy as it extends beyond energy and transportation to other sectors, among which textile is a priority, he said.

The government has released nearly Rs 50 billion for the textile sector in the current financial year that has arrested the declining trend of textile exports, a Pakistani newspaper report quoted Malik as saying at the ‘International Conference on Textiles and Clothing — Inspiring Change’.

He assured other steps for long-term sustainability of the sector.
Compared to a poor state of the economy in 2013, Pakistan has recorded a remarkable revival in the last five year with a high growth trajectory now and economic growth at around 6 per cent per annum, he added. (DS)
