Uniqlo to stop buying 'mulesed' Australian wool

Japanese apparel giant Uniqlo will stop buying wool from Australian suppliers, who practice ‘mulesing’ of sheep, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia-Pacific, has said.

Mulesing is a procedure in which farmers cut large chunks of skin and flesh from sheep’s backsides, often without giving any painkiller, using instruments resembling gardening shears.

The practice used to prevent flystrike, a type of maggot infection, causes a lot of pain to the lamb and has been condemned by animal rights activists.

Uniqlo said it is aware of concerns raised over the practice of mulesing sheep and due to its commitment to animal welfare and health, it has directed its merino wool suppliers in Australia to phase out buying of wool from farms that practice mulesing.

With this step, Uniqlo has joined the list of global brands like Topshop, H&M, Hugo Boss, Gap and Abercrombie & Fitch that have pledged to a similar boycott of wool from mulesed sheep.
