New Zealand merino wool meets Japanese demand

Merino wool from New Zealand is finding bigger market in Japan owing to setting up of a direct supply route from New Zealand merino wool growers to a top Japanese suit manufacturer.

A trial shipment of 15-micron wool was dispatched earlier this year from New Zealand to the Konaka Company in Japan and another 70 tonnes of 18.5-micron merino wool would soon be on its way to Konaka.

The wool to be exported will come from Canterbury and the Japanese company has already shown interest in buying some 20.5-micron merino wool.

The wool is also expected to be supplied to carpet and futon manufacturers in Japan in near future.

As a result, the Canterbury wool stations received about 25 percent more prices for their clips than the current market price.
