The agreement to end the campaign against Australian farmers by radical American animal rights group PETA, is a clear indication that the group's will is failing and that it is looking for an exit strategy.

The President of WoolProducers - the peak wool industry body in Australia - Mr Robert Pietsch, today said that the agreement is a clear admission that PETA was wrong on key issues during the campaign.

“This is a PETA back down. I am heartened by today's news, as it clearly demonstrates that PETA's campaign has not been as successful as it had intended and that the radical group is looking to salvage some level of credibility.”

“PETA has today acknowledged that it is not in the best interests of Australian sheep to end mulesing without a viable alternative, a fact that industry has been telling them all along. PETA has acknowledged that 2010 is an appropriate deadline to cease mulesing.”

“We have chosen a strategy of working with international retailers of woollen products to help them to better understand Australian farming practices and to recognise the unique qualities of wool, messages that have been well-received.”

“WoolProducers, as part of the Australian Wool and Sheep Industry Taskforce, supports the continuation of live sheep exports, and any agreement that threatens this important Australian industry willnot be considered. I say the live sheep export trade is not negotiable.”

“History has shown PETA cannot be trusted, and I would say in regards to this agreement, beware of a wolf in sheep's clothing.”
