According to customs statistics, in the period during January-September 2007 China's wool imports reached about 260,400 tons, up 18.86 percent over the same time last year. Of these, imports in the first quarter were 80,200 tons, in second and third quarters the figures were 98,500 and 81,600 tons respectively.

In this time period, among all imports raw wool scored 203,800 tons, with a rise of 17.4 percent; clean wool touched 33,400 tons, growing to 52.7 percent; wool top were 15,600 tons, down 1.1 percent; carbonized wool were 5869 tons, down 12.1 percent.

The country imported the largest wool volume from Australia. In the first nine months this year, China's imports of Australian wool were 153,100 tons, up 13.22 percent. Other importing destinations were New Zealand with 26,600 tons, down 8.15 percent, Uruguay for 19,580 tons, up 20.37 percent; South African at 7,087 tons, and Argentine were 6,989 tons.

As Australian and New Zealand dollar value sharply rise in international financial market, Merino wool price is creating new records in global wool market. Thus, raw material cost of China's wool textiles has increased. In September, China imported 19,600 tons wool, down 9.3 percent. The fourth quarter is expected to see slow growth of wool import volume.
