To promote the interests of Dubai's fashion designers in the Emirates and abroad, a call was given to set up a Dubai Fashion Council at a roundtable discussion between the local fashion designers and the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Designers suggested that a non-profit fashion council can be set up on the lines of British Fashion Council (BFC) and Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which are backed by the respective Governments and enable the designers to raise issues affecting them.
At the meeting, designers also called for establishing fashion funds and awards so that best local talents can be encouraged.
Getting necessary financial support and finding an affordable retail space in Dubai's shopping malls were cited as the two main challenges faced by the local fashion designers, aspiring to make their presence felt in Dubai.
Other challenges that were faced by local designers included the inadequate support from the industry, input costs related to labour and textiles, and logistical issues like finding a small and affordable storehouse.
The designers felt that setting up a fashion council would help in getting funds and providing logistics services to the designers. The council can also define and set standards for the industry including commitments of the tailors and professionalism.
