Gaurang Shah, the Indian designer who has been acclaimed for transforming the total outlook of a khadi saree in terms of texture, designs, colour and finish using jamdani weave, is going to showcase his spring summer collection during Berlin Fashion Week, Lavera Showfloor Kosmos.

He is the only Indian designer this season who has been invited to showcase in Lavera Showfloor at Kosmos, one of the biggest eco and sustainable fashion shows in the world, on July 5, 2012.

The designer, who is credited for bringing khadi saree at par with international design standards that appeal even to the younger generation, will be presenting a collection of 24 outfits, including 3 sarees and 21 Indo-western attires.

The collection is going to offer the best mélange of India and the West, and would include unique outfits and patterns created using handloom fabrics of khadis, kotas and organzas and exhibiting the finest of jamdani weave and parsi embroidery.

The designer’s label “GAURANG” personifies elegance and captivating beauty of traditional handlooms and weaves created using jamdani technique with pure zari on cottons and silks.

Traditional motifs, inspired by the sculptures of South Indian temples, floral and geometrics drawn from the nature are the hallmark of his creations.

Gaurang is an avid exponent of varied textures and rich borders in the weaves. Be it a cotton saree with a silk border or a muga tussar border with a khadi body, the creations are an enchanting fusion of tradition and craftsmanship.

Different types of yarns like dupion, jute, muga, noil adorned with gold and silver zari are used for the design weaves, whereas eco-friendly and natural dyes from various fruits and leaves enrich the enchanting range of his creations.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Gaurang Shah, said, “I work with about 400 weavers. We work on handlooms and are doing khadi outfits using the jamdani technique of weaving.”

“We take the khadi yarn, do the jamdani weaving on it and then club it with a fabric from kota and organza from Benaras,” he explains.

“I always had a passion to work with Indian weavers. I am working only on handlooms since the last 12 years. I like playing with the Indian fabric and develop new styles on it,” he adds.

At a time when embroideries on chiffons and georgettes were a rage, Gaurang still had faith on his love for handwoven sarees and earned his fame as a trendsetter by bringing those sarees in vogue again and for maintaining his faith on himself.

Gaurang believes that bringing back happiness in the weaver communities is the true fabric of culture and revival of tradition.
