Maya Crawley, Auckland-based architect-turned-designer, has been inspired to introduce Italian fashion in New Zealand, which at the moment combines material and beads in such an innovative way with Italian jewellery.

The kiwi in Italy currently stocks the clothing and jewellery collections of Venice-trained designer Maria Calderara and local art and then sells them from her Xenobia Boutique which she opened in March 2005 in the medieval Tuscan village of San Gimingnano.

In her recent visit to Auckland to touch base with family and friends, Crawley was doing a little window shopping when she got her thinking that Auckland is ready for Calderara, 'a more feminine version of Zambesi'.

The Calderara 'look' is achieved by pairing clothing with the jewellery range. Calderara's jewellery is distinctly Italian. The rings, necklaces, and bracelets are made from Murano glass beads which has a long-stretching history in Venice and the Island of Murano.

Crawley has planned to visit New Zealand once every two years with her the latest collections which she will showcase during intimate soirees where customers can view and mingle, the first of which is to take place early 2007.
