MUMBAI:
After dressing up Deepa Mehta for the Oscar red carpet and suing a Kolkata firm for stealing her designs the doyen of Indian fashion, Ritu Kumar is now gearing up for her 'Tree of life' show, as part of a larger India showcase to be held at ITB show at Berlin, this March.
The show, an audio-visual and fashion presentation about 20 years ago all over the country, attempts to showcase a contemporary twist to traditional Indian crafts.
The show will be presented in five sequences opening with Rajasthan, moving into khadi, motifs like paisley, then into handicrafts like chikankari, winding up with showcasing tensile strength of zardozi.
The clothes were created way back in the '80s, except for couple of garments, said Ritu Kumar.
The same show was last shown at the Red Fort Delhi and earlier at shown at Singapore, Hong Kong and at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
It shows that Indian culture and handlooms have been able to adapt themselves to changing fashion and many young designers are genuinely using handloom in their works, she said.
There is a worldwide shift towards natural fabrics and India being the largest cotton growing country; cotton, khadi and all fall into the natural scheme of things.
"We will be ready by next week and the collection will be influenced by ecology," said Ritu Kumar.
