Clothing retailers welcome 'Country of Origin Labeling' regulation

law of 'country of origin' labeling effective from monday, will not arise much supply obstructions for the major clothing retailers, as most of them are already following the labeling law on a voluntary basis for certain period.

the law is imposed to know the buyer's choices whether they want to buy locally made garments, or imported, in the middle of a disaster in the domestic clothing and textile manufacturing industry caused by a flood of cheap imports from china.

general manager of tfg apparel supply company, foschini's in-house merchandise procurement arm, selwyn eagle informed that the company has no problems in implementing the scheme as it started implementing the process three months ago, though it was made official only at the end of last month.

foschini has welcomed the origin-labeling plan and fully carry it, added eagle.

head of clothing technology, woolworth's jim stocks informed that the group had no problems with supply of labeled garments.

truworths ceo michael mark said the company had been following country of origin labelling voluntarily since about 2000.

edcon, executive manager for investor relations tessa christelis stated that the company did not hope the laws to create any problem of supply.

aaron searll, chairman of clothing and textiles manufacturer seardel has welcomed the law, but urged for other protective measures for the industry.
