The 2006 WCO IT Conference & Exhibition co-organized by the World Customs Organization and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in co-operation with the Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs will take place in Bangalore (India) from 6-8 April 2006.

Customs authorities, the ICT sector, the business community, and other international trade stakeholders will gather together to discuss IT issues and their impact on Customs across the globe.

This year's Conference and Exhibition poses the question: "Outsourcing and off-shoring: A challenge for Customs?

This Conference will provide a platform for cross-sector cooperation to explore the many digital opportunities and challenges provided by the latest IT technologies and the Customs IT environment as the role of Customs changes from traditional gatekeeper to 21st century information manager.

The event also provides an ideal opportunity to advance the partnership between Customs and the IT community with a view to strengthening Customs operations.

The Hon. Mr. Shri P. Chidambaram, the Indian Minister of Finance, will participate in the opening ceremony.

Ray McDonagh (WCO Deputy Director) and Shoumen Palit Austin Datta (MIT Research Scientist and Research Director for the MIT Forum for Supply Chain Innovation) will co-chair the event which includes an array of distinguished speakers including a special keynote address by Sir Clive Granger, the 2003 Nobel Prize laureate in Economics.

A parallel Exhibition will offer global networking opportunities, enabling Customs administrations and other participants to obtain first hand information from suppliers and users on IT solutions, technologies and trends.
