Bangladesh garment industry needs ICT support: BGMEA

The readymade garment industry in Bangladesh needs support in information and communications technology (ICT) in order to make its vision of reaching US$ 50 billion-mark in exports by 2021, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
 
Participating in a seminar on ‘ICT for better manageability in Private Sector’, held at Bangabandhu International Centre in Dhaka, BGMEA president Md Atiqul Islam said that about 40,000 people are currently employed in information technology (IT) department in the garment sector of Bangladesh.
 
He said there is a scope to employ more people in IT department of garment industry.
 
He expressed interest to work together with Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) to improve productivity of the garment industry by making optimum use of technology.
 
Bangladesh’s minister of industries Amir Hossain Amu, and senior secretary of the commerce ministry Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, also took part in the discussion.
