An Intelligent Textiles for Personal Protection and Safety Workshop will be held during September 7-10, 2005, at Zadar, Croatia.

The objective of the workshop is to explore advanced intelligent textile-based technologies for enhancing the personal protection and safety of individuals engaged in guarding against terrorism around the world.

The co-directors organizing the ARW are:

Prof Paul KIEKENS Prof PhD Sundaresan JAYARAMAN Prof Ana Marija GRANCARIC from Ghent University, Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Zagreb.

It is hard to place a price tag either on human life or on the quality of life. This has become starkly evident since the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 in New York.

A new “normal” has emerged for people around the world and our “way of life,” as we have known it, has been changed forever.

Technology is the key to defense against any form of terrorism – be it, for example, chemical, biological or nuclear; it is also the key to enhancing the safety and quality of life for everyone – from ordinary citizens to first responders attending to disaster victims, to soldiers combating terrorism.

There is a critical need for sensors – human-worn and environmental – to detect and prevent terrorism.

Textiles provide “large” surface areas and can serve as a viable platform for “hosting” the large numbers of sensors and processors required for such applications.
