Tokyo based Kao Corporation announced that construction of Kao (China) Research & Development Center in the suburbs of Shanghai city (Zizhu Science-based Industrial Park) has been completed and the opening ceremony was held on March 9, 2006.
The R&D center is linked to the global network of Kao Group's 16 R&D bases around the world, including Japan, ASEAN, and Europe. The center plays an important role in the acceleration of product development to meet consumer needs in the Chinese market, which are expected to grow steadily.
Upon Kao (China) Holding Co Ltd receiving permission of incorporation from the City of Shanghai at the end of 2004, the R&D company was established, and the center was constructed on a 5000 square meter area of land in the Shanghai Zizhu Science-based Industrial Park.
Research will be mainly focused on beauty care including skin care, hair care, and cosmetics but there are also plans to extend to other consumer products such as sanitary napkins, household cleaning detergents.
Since 1994, Kao Group has been manufacturing and selling its consumer products; including hair care, skin care, laundry detergent, and sanitary napkins through Kao Corporation Shanghai. This newly opened R&D center will proceed in developing Kao's concept of meeting local consumer needs in China and the Chinese-speaking region by developing value-added products.
In addition, Kanebo Cosmetics Inc., which joined the Kao Group on January 31this year, changed the name of its operating company in China to Kanebo Cosmetics (China) Co., Ltd. and held a ceremony to mark this event on March 8. At the R&D center there are also plans to strengthen research into premium beauty care such as Kao's Sofina brand and Kanebo's cosmetic products.
