Bharathiar University (BU) in Coimbatore got sanction from the Department of Science and Technology for a project research on characterization and performance study of solid lubricant and wear resistance surface coating on textile machinery components.

BU reported today that it had recognized some conventional crafts for enhancement and transformation using plasma technology and textile industry in the Southern region.

The assignment was to develop the presentation of textile machinery apparatus, using thermal plasma surface coatings of machinery parts, it said.

The project worth Rs.37 lakh uses surface coatings and solid lubricants, to wear resistance of components and friction on the surfaces, which would be condensed to increase the life of components and improve the quality of textiles.

Dr P V A Padmanabhan, Scientific Officer, laser and plasma technology division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai and Dr Krishna M Gupt, Professor Department of metallurgical engineering and material sciences, IIT, Mumbai would be the consultants for the project, the release added.
