  • Fabric manufacturers aimed to stock up, but uncertain demand hindered confidence.
  • However, cotton prices eased after a drop in ICE cotton rates.
  • Panipat's recycled yarn prices were stable and north India saw a ₹100 drop in cotton prices.
Prices of cotton yarn in north India have skyrocketed since last week, with increases of ₹8-10 per kg in the Ludhiana and Delhi markets. Traders attribute this steep hike to rising cotton prices, indicating a supply-side price surge. Fabric manufacturers were eager to build up stocks, but they lacked confidence in demand from the garment industry. However, cotton prices eased today after a fall in ICE cotton prices. The Indian home textile hub of Panipat continued to see stability in recycled yarn prices. Cotton comber and recycled polyester fibre prices also remained stable.

A trader from the Ludhiana market told Fibre2Fashion, "Yarn prices were supported by the higher cost of cotton. Buyers were eager to purchase the intermediary product, anticipating further price increases. However, there was no positive sentiment in the downstream industry." In Ludhiana, 30-count cotton combed yarn was sold at ₹277-287 per kg (inclusive of GST); 20 and 25-count combed yarns were traded at ₹266-277 per kg and ₹273-283 per kg, respectively; and carded yarn of 30-count was noted at ₹257-264 per kg today, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

A Delhi-based trader told F2F, “Cotton fibre prices have seen a higher increase compared to yarn and fabric. This indicates that garment retail sales are not supportive of the current rise in raw material costs. It is important to observe how the value chain absorbs the price rise.” In this market, 30-count combed yarn was traded at ₹275-280 per kg (excluding GST), 40-count combed at ₹300-305 per kg, 30-count carded at ₹250-255 per kg, and 40-count carded at ₹277-280 per kg today.

India’s home textile hub Panipat noted stability in recycled yarn prices, while cotton comber and recycled polyester fibre remained steady. Comber prices had increased in the last week due to a rise in cotton prices. According to traders, there was slow demand for most recycled yarn varieties. However, white recycled PC yarn had seen good demand as it is being used in hosiery garments due to significant pressure to utilise recycled yarn.

In Panipat, 10s recycled PC yarn (Grey) was traded at ₹76-80 per kg (with GST paid). Other varieties and counts were noted as 10s recycled PC yarn (Black) at ₹51-54 per kg, 20s recycled PC yarn (Grey) at ₹88-93 per kg, and 30s recycled PC yarn (Grey) at ₹133-142 per kg. Cotton comber prices were noted at ₹115-117 per kg and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) was noted at ₹71-73 per kg, as per TexPro.

North India cotton prices eased by ₹100 per maund of 37.2 kg after a steep hike since last week. Domestic prices took a rest after a fall in ICE cotton prices, decreasing by around 2.5 per cent ahead of US cotton sales data. Traders mentioned that north India cotton prices eased due to global trends. Spinning mills, stockists, and MNCs were regularly buying cotton at any price as the arrival season is ending.

Today’s arrival reduced to 13,000 bales of 170 kg. State-wise arrivals were noted as Punjab with 1,500 bales, Haryana with 4,000 bales, upper Rajasthan with 4,000 bales, and lower Rajasthan with 3,500 bales. Cotton was priced in Punjab at ₹5,875-5,925 and in Haryana at ₹5,825-5,825 per maund of 37.2 kg. Bikaner line cotton was sold at ₹5,800-6,000 per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹56,600-58,000 per candy of 356 kg.
