  • Cotton yarn prices stabilised in south India, amid slow demand, with trading expected to normalise soon.
  • Mumbai saw stable prices, while Tiruppur's market was quiet due to Pongal.
  • In Gujarat, cotton prices remained steady with reduced arrivals.
  • The industry faces challenges globally and locally, with cautious purchasing affecting both yarn and fabric.

Cotton yarn prices remained steady in the Tiruppur and Mumbai markets of southern India, as demand continued to be sluggish. In the Tiruppur market, trading activity was minimal, with many traders and factory workers still on holiday due to Pongal. It is expected that trade will normalise within 2-3 days.

Meanwhile, in the Mumbai market, cotton yarn prices were stable amidst slow demand. Traders noted that the delayed winter season in northern India negatively impacted the market, with power looms operating at reduced capacity due to limited fabric demand, influenced by the cautious approach of the garment industry.

A Mumbai trader told Fibre2Fashion, “Cotton yarn was traded at previous prices. Spinning mills were attempting to maintain prices, but the weaving industry was very slow in placing new orders. In fact, fabric prices are also under pressure due to cautious purchasing by the garment industry.” In Mumbai, 60-carded yarn of warp and weft varieties was sold at ₹1,425-1,450 and ₹1,310-1,380 per 5 kg (excluding GST), respectively. Other prices included 60 combed warp at ₹318-325 per kg, 80 carded weft at ₹1,400-1,440 per 4.5 kg, 44/46 carded warp at ₹254-263 per kg, 40/41 carded warp at ₹242-248 per kg, 40/41 combed warp at ₹264-268 per kg, and 30/32 carded warp at ₹232-237 per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

The Tiruppur market was expected to return to normalcy within 2-3 days following the Pongal holiday. The market's direction will become clearer once normal trading in cotton yarn resumes. The textile industry continues to face challenges in both global and local markets, with overall sentiment remaining subdued.

In Tiruppur, cotton yarn prices were noted as 30 count combed cotton yarn at ₹258-262 per kg (excluding GST), 34 count combed cotton yarn at ₹268-273 per kg, 40 count combed cotton yarn at ₹280-284 per kg, 30 count carded cotton yarn at ₹233-236 per kg, 34 count carded cotton yarn at ₹237-242 per kg and 40 count carded cotton yarn at ₹240-246 per kg, as per TexPro.

Cotton prices also showed stability in the Gujarat market. Slow demand and trading activities affected cotton arrival, which decreased today. In the Gujarat market, Shankar-6 cotton was quoted between ₹54,800-55,000 per candy of 356 kg. Southern mills were looking to purchase cotton at ₹55,700-56,200 per candy. The arrival was reported as 30,000-32,000 bales of 170 kg in Gujarat, with an all-India estimate of 150,000-152,000 bales of 170 kg.
