India’s viscose yarn prices dropped in Surat market due to a flood of cheaper supplies from China, while they remained stable in Mumbai. Viscose vortex yarn prices eased by ₹2 per kg. Trade sources noted that Chinese viscose yarn will land in India at about 5-7 per cent lower than domestic prices. Polyester yarn prices also fell by ₹1-2 per kg in Ludhiana and Surat markets following a price cut in virgin polyester fibre. Experts predict that the weaker trend may persist in the polyester and viscose yarn markets in the coming weeks.

Viscose compact yarn prices in Surat dropped by ₹2 per kg and viscose vortex yarn prices remained stable. The market is experiencing slow demand and reports of Chinese supplies. A trader from Surat told Fibre2Fashion, “Cheaper viscose yarn from China may hit the Indian market in May. Several importers have already finalised deals for vortex viscose yarn at 5-7 per cent lower prices (landed prices) than domestic rates.” A Mumbai trader added that most viscose yarn import deals were finalised in southern states, where imported yarn will be consumed at prices ₹10-12 per kg lower than local yarn.

In Mumbai, imported 30 count viscose vortex yarn was priced at ₹203-207 (approximately $2.38-2.42) per kg; and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹204-209 (approximately $2.39-2.45) per kg.

In Surat, 30 viscose compact yarn (local) was sold at ₹218-220 (approximately $2.55-2.58) per kg (GST extra) and 30 viscose vortex yarn at ₹204-205 (approximately $2.39-2.40) per kg.

The polyester yarn market in Surat declined by ₹1 per kg in most varieties. Cheaper virgin polyester contributed to the price cut by spinners. Although virgin polyester prices were slashed by ₹4 per kg last week, spinning mills only reduced yarn prices by ₹1 per kg. Market sources noted slow polyester yarn demand, which encouraged mills to lower prices. The bearish trend is expected to continue in the coming weeks.

In Surat, 30 count polyester spun yarn traded at ₹143-144 (approximately $1.67-1.69) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹156-158 (approximately $1.83-1.85) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹113-114 (approximately $1.32-1.33) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹104-105 (approximately $1.22-1.23) per kg and 75 bright yarn at ₹104-105 (approximately $1.22-1.23) per kg.

Polyester spun yarn prices dropped by ₹2 per kg in the Ludhiana market, while polyester-cotton yarn prices remained steady. Major producers in the country had reduced the price of virgin polyester fibre by ₹4 per kg, following a steep fall in crude oil prices over the past fortnight due to the US-China tariff war. Traders said that polyester spun yarn prices had adjusted in response to the fibre price cut. Slow demand also prompted mills to lower prices in the polyester spun market. However, stronger cotton prices prevented a decline in PC yarn prices. Market sources noted that slow demand remains a major concern for the upstream industry, with uncertainty and tight payment conditions reducing the purchasing power of potential buyers.

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹204-214 (approximately $2.39-2.51) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹192-202 (approximately $2.25-2.36) per kg; 20 recycled polyester yarn at ₹114-120 (approximately $1.33-1.40) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹150-162 (approximately $1.76-1.90) per kg (GST inclusive); recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹79-80 (approximately $0.92-0.94) per kg; and virgin polyester fibre at ₹96 (approximately $1.12) per kg.

In north India, cotton prices gained ₹10-20 per maund of 37.2 kg as spinning mills purchased cotton at higher prices, facing a supply shortage of cotton yarn due to negligible stock with ginners. Cotton arrivals are expected to end in a few weeks, with about 27.50 lakh bales (170 kg) already arrived. The total arrival may not exceed 28 lakh bales this season. Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has secured a large portion of the current crop and will gradually release it over the coming months.

In north India, cotton arrival was 1,700 bales of 170 kg, with 100 bales in Punjab, 800 bales in Haryana, 500 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 300 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices ranged from ₹5,700 to ₹5,710 (approximately $66.73-66.85) per maund of 37.2 kg in Punjab, ₹5,610 to ₹5,640 (approximately $65.68-66.03) in Haryana, ₹5,720-₹5,750 (approximately $66.97-67.32) in upper Rajasthan, and ₹54,000 to ₹55,500 (approximately $632.21-649.77) per candy of 356 kg in lower Rajasthan.
