  • India's man-made yarn markets showed mixed trends.
  • Viscose yarn prices rose ₹5-6/kg in Mumbai and Surat due to supply shortages and festival demand, while polyester spun yarn eased ₹1-2/kg in Surat amid weak demand.
  • Ludhiana's PC yarn market remained stable but sluggish.
  • North India's cotton prices fell ₹40-60/maund due to weak demand and ICE cotton decline, affecting textile exporters.
India’s man-made yarn markets have taken opposite routes due to different dynamics. Viscose yarn prices have further jumped by ₹5-6 per kg in the Mumbai and Surat markets as a shortage of supplies has fuelled prices. Festival and wedding demand in the coming months has also encouraged buying. However, polyester yarn eased by ₹2 per kg in the Surat market due to slow demand. Specialised polyester yarn and polyester-cotton yarn remained stable in Surat and Ludhiana amid limited buying. Man-made yarn markets are facing payment scarcity due to the payment rule regarding small and micro enterprises.

Viscose yarn has experienced limited supply from both domestic manufacturers and global sources. The shortage of supplies has further fuelled viscose yarn prices. Viscose yarn prices have increased by ₹5-6 per kg in the Surat and Mumbai markets. A trader from the Surat market told Fibre2Fashion, “The current price rise is driven by supply shortages. Buyers are actively looking for raw materials ahead of the Eid festival and wedding season. The rising US dollar against the Indian rupee has also increased the landed cost of viscose yarn. Higher import costs have further discouraged supplies from the global market."

In Mumbai, imported 30-count viscose vortex yarn was priced at ₹201-205 (approximately $2.32-2.37) per kg, while local 30-count ring-spun viscose yarn was priced at ₹202-207 (approximately $2.33-2.39) per kg. In Surat, 30-count viscose compact yarn (local) was sold at ₹215-216 (approximately $2.48-2.50) per kg (GST extra), and 30-count viscose vortex yarn was priced at ₹205-206 (approximately $2.37-2.38) per kg.

Surat’s polyester yarn market saw a declining trend in prices as the market faced slow demand and tight payment conditions. However, the market remained steady for specialised polyester yarn, such as fully drawn yarn (FDY). Polyester spun yarn eased by ₹1-2 per kg. According to market sources, buyers will be reluctant to purchase from small and micro enterprises (SMEs) in February and March, as they must clear bills within 45 days in the same fiscal year. Demand may slow down in the coming weeks due to the payment rule, as there is no relief from the government.

In the Surat market, 30-count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹145-146 (approximately $1.67-1.69) per kg (GST extra); 40-count polyester spun yarn at ₹158-159 (approximately $1.83-1.84) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹115-116 (approximately $1.33-1.34) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹105-106 (approximately $1.21-1.22) per kg; and 75 bright yarn at ₹105-106 (approximately $1.21-1.22) per kg.

The Ludhiana market witnessed slow demand for polyester-cotton and polyester yarn. However, prices hovered near the previous close. Market sources said that buyers remained silent on fresh purchases. Demand for polyester and PC yarn has declined due to tight payment conditions. Some traders are linking the slow demand to the upcoming budget, stating that buyers adopt a cautious approach before the budget announcement, as it can influence yarn prices.

In Ludhiana, 30-count PC combed yarn (48/52) was traded at ₹210-220 (approximately $2.43-2.54) per kg (GST inclusive); 30-count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹196-206 (approximately $2.26-2.38) per kg; 20-count recycled polyester at ₹114-125 (approximately $1.32-1.44) per kg; 30-count polyester spun yarn at ₹158-165 (approximately $1.83-1.91) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹79-82 (approximately $0.91-0.95) per kg. Virgin polyester fibre was priced at ₹103 (approximately $1.19) per kg.

In North India, cotton prices dipped by ₹40-60 per maund of 37.2 kg over the last two days. Slow local demand and a declining trend in ICE cotton were responsible for the price drop. Traders said that falling ICE cotton prices will add to the woes of Indian textile exporters, as they will face greater disparity in the global market. Domestic spinning mills are aware of this, which has discouraged fresh buying.

North India’s cotton arrivals totalled 11,700 bales of 170 kg, comprising 700 bales in Punjab, 3,000 bales in Haryana, 5,000 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 3,000 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,510 to ₹5,520 (approximately $63.65-63.77) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,490 to ₹5,510 (approximately $63.42-63.65). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,500 and ₹5,520 (approximately $63.53-63.77) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, it was priced at ₹52,500 to ₹53,600 (approximately $606.46-618.01) per candy of 356 kg. Seed cotton was priced at ₹7,150-7,550 (approximately $82.59-87.22) per quintal of 100 kg.
