India’s man-made yarn market noticed mixed trend due to diversified factors. Viscose yarn witnessed strong demand with price rise in Mumbai market. Limited imports due to rising freight charges reduced availability of the product. Wedding season also boosted demand of viscose yarn in the domestic market. The prices of polyester-cotton yarn eased in Ludhiana market as summer demand settled after spike post-Diwali. Polyester yarn remained stable amid average demand. But recycled polyester fibre and yarn gained as PET bottle prices jumped due to short supply and rising demand in the value chain.

Ludhiana market noticed fall of ₹4 per kg in polyester-cotton, but polyester spun yarn remained stable. Costlier recycled polyester fibre supported its yarn by ₹2 per kg. A trader from Ludhiana market told Fibre2Fashion, “PC yarn prices eased after settling summer demand after rising post-Diwali. Cheaper cotton also led to ease in the blended yarn market. But rise in recycled polyester fibre boosted price rise in 20 recycled polyester yarn. PET bottle prices rose by more than 10 per cent in the last couple of weeks.” Recycled polyester fibre gained by ₹2-3 per kg in the last fortnight.

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹209-219 (approximately $2.48-2.60) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹196-206 (approximately $2.32-2.44) per kg; 20 recycled polyester at ₹112-121 (approximately $1.33-1.43) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹158-165 (approximately $1.87-1.96) per kg (GST inclusive); recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹78-81 (approximately $0.92-0.96) per kg; and virgin polyester fibre at ₹100.50 (approximately $1.19) per kg.

Surat’s polyester yarn market witnessed stability amid average demand. The market did not see significant movement in different types of polyester yarn. However, trading activities were good due to demand in downstream industry owing to the current wedding season. According to market sources, stability in virgin polyester fibre caused for steadiness in yarn prices. In addition, current wedding season is a good sign for the entire value chain.

In Surat market, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹147-148 (approximately $1.74-1.75) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹160-161 (approximately $1.90-1.91) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) ₹114-115 (approximately $1.35-1.36) per kg; 75/72 FDY ₹106-107 (approximately $1.26-1.27) per kg; 75 bright yarn ₹105-106 (approximately $1.24-1.26) per kg.

Viscose yarn (mainly used for ladies’ garments) prices were stable in Surat, but its prices rose by ₹1-2 per kg in Mumbai market. Trade sources said that the market noticed good demand due to the current wedding season. A trader from Mumbai market said that shipping freight charges have seen steep rise in the last couple of weeks. Therefore, importers have slowed down imports of viscose yarn, and domestic demand is more dependent on local supply of viscose yarn.

In Mumbai, imported 30 count viscose vortex yarn was priced at ₹193-199 (approximately $2.29-2.36) per kg; and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹198-203 (approximately $2.35-2.41) per kg in this market. In Surat, 30 viscose compact yarn (local) was sold at ₹210-212 (approximately $2.49-2.51) per kg (GST extra) and 30 viscose vortex yarn at ₹203-204 (approximately $2.41-2.42) per kg.

In north India, cotton prices improved by ₹10-20 per maund of 37.2 kg after beginning of cotton procurement by Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) in Haryana and Rajasthan. The government trading company has begun buying seed cotton at MSP after fall in the price of seed cotton. Its prices came down to ₹7,200-7,400 per quintal. Trade sources said that seed cotton prices may not fall further as CCI’s buying will expand procurement in the coming weeks. Cotton arrival was slightly higher, but it is still below than the average arrival of 30,000-35,000 bales of 170 kg during this time of the year.

North India’s cotton arrival was 14,200 bales of 170 kg, comprising 700 bales in Punjab, 3,500 bales in Haryana, 4,000 bales in upper Rajasthan and 6,000 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,590 to ₹5,610 (approximately $66.25-66.48) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,580 to ₹5,590 (approximately $66.13-66.25). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,580- ₹5,600 (approximately $66.13-66.36) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, it was priced at ₹53,000 to ₹54,000 (approximately $628.09-639.94) per candy of 356 kg. While seed cotton was priced as ₹7,200-7,400 (approximately $85.32-87.70) per quintal of 100 kg.
