  • Man-made yarn markets across India—Ludhiana, Surat and Mumbai—are facing a bearish trend with decreased demand impacting prices, particularly for polyester spun and viscose yarns.
  • While cotton prices in north India are rising, the overall yarn market is under pressure from slow downstream demand, leading to price reductions and concerns about future demand.

Man-made yarns, including polyester spun and viscose yarns, have experienced a bearish trend in India due to slow demand from the downstream industry. Although polyester-cotton yarn and poly spun yarn traded steadily in the Ludhiana market, poly spun yarn declined in Surat due to selling pressure on traders and manufacturers, with polyester spun yarn prices decreasing by ₹1-2 per kg. A significant import of polyester fabric also negatively impacted the entire value chain.

The Ludhiana market experienced slower demand from the weaving industry. Although PC yarn and polyester spun yarn were sold steadily, the sentiments remained very weak. Sluggish demand in the fabric and garment industry was a cause for concern in the yarn market. A trader from the Ludhiana market informed Fibre2Fashion, "There was a huge stock of finished goods throughout the entire value chain. Mills were forced to not only reduce their prices but also their production."

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹195-207 per kg (GST inclusive), 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) sold for ₹180-190 per kg, and 30 count polyester spun was ₹153-163 per kg (GST inclusive) in Ludhiana. Recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) was quoted at ₹70-72 per kg, and virgin polyester staple fibre was offered at ₹105 per kg by the manufacturers.

In Surat, the market witnessed a bearish trend amid poor demand. Poly spun yarn prices dropped by ₹1-2 per kg due to reduced buying from weaving mills. The upcoming summer season is expected to further dampen demand for polyester fabric as consumers generally avoid polyester clothing during warmer months.

Prices for 30 count poly spun yarn were quoted at ₹136-137 per kg, and 40 count poly spun yarn ranged from ₹148-152 per kg. Conversely, viscose yarn prices remained stable, with 30 viscose compact yarn (local) trading at ₹197-199 per kg in Surat.

Similarly, in the Mumbai market, viscose yarn prices were unchanged due to slow demand from the downstream industry and bleak future prospects. Mahesh Sharma, a trader from Mumbai told Fibre2Fashion, “The market sentiments were very weak as demand was very slow and mills have huge stocks with them. Demand was unlikely to improve in the months to come.”

In Mumbai, imported viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹178-183 per kg and local ring spun viscose yarn was quoted at ₹187-190 per kg, as per TexPro.

North India's cotton prices have witnessed an upward trend due to strong demand from spinning mills and reduced arrivals. Prices gained ₹25-50 per maund of 37.2 kg in the north Indian markets, driven by mills' desire to replenish stocks amidst a likely reduction in cotton arrivals and support from stronger ICE cotton prices. Daily cotton arrivals decreased to 24,000 bales of 170 kg across the region, with state-wise arrival as follows: Punjab 3,000 bales, Haryana 6,000 bales, upper Rajasthan 7,000 bales, and lower Rajasthan 8,000 bales. Prices in Punjab ranged between ₹5,450-5,550, in Haryana ₹5,425-5,550, and in upper Rajasthan ₹5,350-5,600 per maund. Additionally, Bikaner line cotton sold for ₹75-100 per maund higher than Shri Ganganagar line in upper Rajasthan, with prices noted at ₹52,000-54,000 per candy of 356 kg in lower Rajasthan.
