A peso 41.57-million yarn centre will soon open in the Philippines’ Miag-ao town in Iloilo as part of the Western Visayas administrative region’s efforts to revive its textile industry. With funding from the department of science and technology (DOST), the facility aims to supply cent per cent Philippine-made yarns to domestic weavers and social enterprises.

The facility will be located inside the Miag-ao campus of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U), said Rowen Gelonga, DOST regional director for the region.

DOST’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) will train the staff to produce natural fibres from abaca, piña and other raw materials, according to a report in a newspaper in the country.

The Miag-ao local government has partnered with the department of agriculture and the department of trade and industry to produce cotton-based fibres from cotton grown in five villages. (DS)
