Anorexia & bulimia worry Government and fashion industry

Most mannequins, stores such as Zara and Mango in Spain have made clothes as per Spanish size - a little larger for women.

Average size of Spanish women is said to be 40 or 42 corresponding to 10 or 12 in British sizes.

The Health Minister and others, who campaign, consider that the catwalk “anorexia chic” and small size dresses displayed in shops just encourage a “culture of extreme thinness”.

In Spain alone, cases diagnosed of anorexia and bulimia are said to have reached one million, which though may not be reliable. According to Salgado, the smaller size garments encourage extreme thinness and the hunt of eternal youth which majority of people cannot attain, but when pursued in extreme cases, can damage their health.

Those who are campaigning for action to help sufferers from anorexia and bulimia have exceedingly delayed, as it has reached the epidemic levels. Public believe, the Government and the companies actions though delayed, is exceptional and admirable.

Esquerra Republicana Catalana, the left-wing party has tabled a parliamentary movement seeking ban of materials that could lead to bulimia or anorexia. The proposal includes banning publicity of clothes sizes, if it could be proved that leads to such conditions.

"J K Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels, has criticized the society, for its obsession of thin women and models. She has written on her official website that she does not want her daughters to grow up as “empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones.”
