For 15-year-old Maryland triplets Connor, Emma and Hayley Gilbert, only one item appears on their holiday wish list: Save Polar Bears from extinction. In pursuit of this goal, the sibling entrepreneurs announced Polar Bear Nation, an exclusive line of 'conservation clothing' available only at PolarBearNation.com.
Fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of Polar Bear Nation apparel will go to non-profit organization Polar Bears International (PBI) to help fund important scientific research and educational scholarships as part of the group's 'Year of the Polar Bear' initiative in 2008. Additional funds are earmarked to further develop the Polar Bear Nation community online and spread the word with teens worldwide.
Polar Bear Nation has outlined four immediate goals that they hope to achieve by the end of this holiday season:
1) raise awareness of the plight of polar bears both in the U.S. and internationally,
2) increase donations for non-profit organizations such as Polar Bears International, which focus on the worldwide conservation and protection of polar bears,
3) raise funds to send teens from around the world to PBI's Adventure Learning Program Leadership Camp next fall to study polar bears and 4) mobilize the leaders of tomorrow to get involved in the effort to help save the polar bears, encourage conversation and spark global understanding.
"Hayley, Emma, and I found out about the struggle polar bears face for their survival, and we knew we had to do something," said Connor Gilbert, Co-Founder of PolarBearNation.com. "Our idea was to create the Polar Bear Nation, an international group of citizens concerned about protecting the Earth and saving polar bears from extinction."
