Surrounded by workers and employers at Blue Cop, a garment factory in Vernon, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled the Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition (EEEC).
The EEEC is a multi-agency enforcement unit designed to target businesses that avoid labor and tax laws to gain competitive advantage over the thousands of legitimate businesses and workers who follow the law.
"Today I am proud to announce the launch of the California Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition, a new partnership to lead our efforts to shut down the underground economy, protect legitimate businesses and enforce the rights of California workers. California's future prosperity depends on the talent and ingenuity of workers and the businesses that employ them," said Governor Schwarzenegger.
"Our state has a dynamic economy, driven by thousands of businesses that succeed through hard work, innovation and creativity and this is good for our state. What's not good for California is when businesses build their success by cheating -- not paying taxes or worker's comp or exploiting workers. We need to make sure every company is on the same page and nobody is cheating the system."
The Department of Industrial Relations' Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, the Employment Development Department and the Contractors State License Board are the partner agencies comprising this new coalition. In addition, the EEEC will partner with the U.S. Department of Labor and various other appropriate state and local government entities to conduct investigations.
