SPARTECA extension to boost garment industry

Foreign Affairs Minister Kaliopate Tavola stated that Fiji's Garment factory owners must take benefit from the seven-year extension of the SPARTECA, Textile, Clothing and Footwear scheme, provided by Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

Tavola appealed garment factories owners to bring out maximum from the extension before it expires in 2011, as garment industry plays an important role in Fiji, generating massive employment and export.

Market access must be used on a long term basis, Tavola added, garment industry must re-organize itself to be more competitive.

The industry requires being strengthened and new market access set ups so that it can be more competitive, he said.

Australia also agreed to provide support in computerization, the admin / managerial skills and to train workers to be more productive.
