Protective clothing, a must for quarry workers

The comittee urged workers to wear protective clothing as they could be fired for refusing to wear such because it puts the company at risk as inspectors would not like to see this kind of situation.

They said it is important to provide change rooms for workers so that workers can clean themselves to before they knock off.

Workers had earlier complained of no change rooms though they work in a dusty environment.

For his part, Moshana Quarry general manager Peter Kernick admitted that the mine does not have a siren which is normally used in mines to alert employees and those living in the surrounding areas about the dynamite blasts.

Though the foremen indicated earlier that they use vehicle hooters to alert villagers, Matlhabaphiri told them that mine laws state that a siren must be used for caution.

He also asked Kernick whether residents understand the purpose of hooting and whether they had been cautioned through a kgotla meeting before.

Kernick said they have not yet mounted the siren and had never informed Moshaneng residents about hooting. On the issue of workers committee, Kernick would not say when the committee will be formed.
