Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas posted on X that, “Due to an unfortunate fire incident today in the vicinity of the Crude Distillation Unit at the HRRL refinery, the scheduled dedication of the refinery by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 21.04.2026 has been postponed. The fire has been brought under control. There are no reports of any casualties. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause(s) of the incident and to undertake necessary remedial measures. A revised date for the dedication will be announced in due course.”
Fire tenders were rushed to the site in Balotra district on Monday as emergency teams worked to contain the flames. The incident caused disruption within the refinery premises, especially ahead of the high-profile inauguration planned for April 21.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage. A revised date for the refinery’s dedication will be announced later.
The Pachpadra project, developed at an investment of over ₹79,450 crore, is India’s first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex. The incident has raised concerns over safety preparedness at the facility, though officials stated that the situation is now under control.
