Prices for services of clothing up in Jan 2006

Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia released the Inflation of January 2006.

It reported that in January consumer prices down by 0.5 percent. For the second consecutive year in January deflation was registered. Consumer prices namely decreased by half a percent compared to the previous month.

In January lower prices were registered in the groups clothing and footwear (by 12.1 percent), health (by 0.8 percent) and recreation and culture (by 0.7 percent).

As in January 2005, in January 2006 too seasonal sales decreased the total price growth; this time by 1 percentage point. Because of sales, clothing was on average cheaper by 13.1 percent, footwear by 11.3 percent, other articles of clothing and accessories by 2.6 percent and clothing materials by 1.7 percent. Prices of services for clothing were up by 2 percent.

Lower prices of some cars and of package holidays decreased the total price growth by 0.1 percentage point.

The decrease was mostly the result of lower prices of goods (on average by 0.9 percent). Semi-durable goods were 8.7 percent cheaper, durable goods were 0.5 percent cheaper and non-durable goods were 1.1 percent more expensive. The trend of higher prices of services continues; this time they were up by 0.2 percent.

The growth of prices measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices was also negative (-0.4 percent), but the 12-month average price growth measured with the EMU convergence price index remained at 2.5 percent.
