Pahang's traditional woven fabric is getting its place of pride with the move to give a new face to the textile initiated by state's royalty.

Tengku Mahkota Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah renamed the fabric 'Royal Pahang Textile' bearing a standard logo, at a glittering ceremony at Pulau Keladi in Pekan.

Deputy Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of Pahang Mentri Besar Datin Seri Junaini Kassim, wife of Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datin Seri Masnah Rais, the ministry's Secretary-General Datuk Siti Azizah Abod and Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation Director General Datuk Zakiah Ahmad, were all present at the ceremony.

Tengku Abdullah used a laptop to mark the launch.

Cultural performance by dancers clad in silk smooth textiles won accolades from all present.

Later, in the presence of guests, Tengku Abdullah tried his hand at weaving, guided by a professional weaver.

Tengku Abdullah revealed that idea to re-brand was suggested by Tengku Azizah herself.

“Actually, I do not know much about weaving but was given a briefing by her the night before. Since her school days in Johor, she has had this passion and skill in sewing and cooking. Her love for the fine art blossomed as she followed me on our official visits statewide,” he said.

“We should come up with efforts to rekindle the art of weaving and market it globally,” he added.
