The Council of Fashion Designers of America's CFDA awards ceremony is frequently referred to as "the Oscars of fashion." Thanks to the crush of stars inside the Celeste Bartos Forum of the New York Public Library, that seemed truer than ever at last night's 25th annual celebration. Scarlett Johansson accompanied Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa.
Costa, who beat an absent Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler's Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough to become the Womenswear Designer of the Year, summed up the giddy mood. "You know the American dream?" the Brazilian-born New Yorker asked. "This is it."
Costa's coup elicited some of the biggest cheers of the night upstairs at the Library, where an additional 300 guests, including models Karolina Kurkova and Elise Crombez and a slew of socials, had gathered to watch a live simulcast of the proceedings. Also causing quite a commotion was Jeremy Piven, who conducted a portion of his hosting duties in the upstairs locale, leading some to think they were being taped for an episode of Entourage.
Onstage, the mutual admiration flowed in earnest. Pals Lindsay Lohan and Karl Lagerfeld shared a few giggles before giving Tom Binns the Accessory prize. Jessica Lange presented her friend, "the magician, Bruce Weber," with the Eugenia Sheppard Award, and the audience responded with the evening's only standing ovation. International talent honoree Olivier Theyskens accepted his statuette from Vogue's Anna Wintour, who wore Rochas.
