CCEA approves extension centre of NIFT at Rae Bareli

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approval for setting up of an extension centre of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Rae Bareli.
In the initial stage to operationalise the Centre in the hired premises for a period of three years at a cost of Rs.10.75 crore (Plan) and Rs.1.5 crore (Non-Plan) excluding the cost of land, construction and major repairs.
The approved extension Centre would ease pressure on existing Delhi, NIFT Centre and minimize the regional mismatch between the number of seats available and the number of applicants based on present locations of NIFT Centres. After the approval, necessary steps would be taken to operationlise the extension Centre from the academic session 2007-08.
Background: The NIFT was set up by the Ministry of Textiles in the year 1986 as an autonomous society fully funded and supported by the Government of India as a National level Institute for Design, Management, and Technology to prepare and train professionals to meet the challenges of the dynamic global market in promoting India's exports in textiles, garments, lifestyle products and other fashion goods.
NIFT has been running full time Diploma programmes through its seven Centres located at New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore.
The quote free trade era w.e.f. 1.1.2005 has positioned India among the chief supplier of textiles and clothing in the world. India'sexports during 2005-06 increased by 22% i.e. from US $ 14 billion in 2004-05 to US $ 17.08 billion in 2005-06.
