The UK Environmental Audit Committee recently questioned leading high street, luxury and online fashion retailers while inquiring into fashion industry sustainability. Chief executives of online retailers ASOS, Boohoo and Missguided were asked to attend after concerns were raised at the committee's first hearing about denial of minimum wage to British workers.

However, Missguided CEO Nitin Passi declined to attend, resulting in a letter from the committee chair Mary Creagh to him expressing disappointment, accordingd to the British parliament website.

Last month, Creagh wrote to the chief executives of the country’s ten leading fashion retailers to find out what steps they were taking to reduce the environmental and social impact of the clothes and shoes they sell.

She also asked the UK’s leading online retailers to give evidence as part of the inquiry, following shocking evidence heard on 30 October about illegally low wages for garment workers and disposability of some fast fashion garments. (DS)
