Wal-Mart slashes December prices in Canada

In an effort to save customers money in the lead up to Christmas, a time of year that places a financial burden on many Canadians, Wal-Mart Canada has announced December rollbacks and price reductions on toys, electronics, home décor, fashion, food and other key merchandise.

y reducing many of its already "everyday low prices," Wal-Mart Canada will offer its Canadian customers tens of millions of dollars in savings by month's end.

While Wal-Mart is dedicated to providing everyday low prices on all items throughout its stores, the company plans various rollbacks before Christmas and unprecedented deals at its Boxing Week events.

"It says 'We Sell For Less' on the front of our store, and we work hard to lower the cost of living," said Jim Thompson, senior vice president of merchandise for Wal-Mart Canada Corp. "That's a promise we make year-round, but it's particularly important at this time of year when our customers' dollars are stretched in many different directions."

Wal-Mart Canada's pricing strategy responds to various December consumer trends:
- Canadians begin their Christmas shopping late. "Unlike U.S. consumers, who traditionally start the holiday rush the day after Thanksgiving, Canadians tend to see December 1 or the first snow fall as their earliest cue to start shopping," said Thompson. "But many will leave their shopping later. Especially this December, when shoppers gain one more shopping day than they had last year. So, we have to be ready with the best deals."
