Cato declares May same store sales drop 2%

The Cato Corporation reported sales of $73.8 million for the four weeks ended May 27, 2006, a 2 percent increase over sales of $72.3 million for the four weeks ended May 28, 2005. Comparable store sales for the month decreased 2 percent.

Sales for the seventeen weeks ended May 27, 2006 were $303.5 million, a 6 percent increase over sales of $287.4 million for the seventeen weeks ended May 28, 2005. The Company's year-to-date comparable store sales increased 1 percent.

"May sales were soft," said John Cato, the Company's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. "Sell-throughs were good and inventory remains fresh."

During the month of May, the Company opened one store in Port Arthur, TX and closed two stores. As of May 27, 2006, the Company operated 1,251 stores in 31 states, compared to 1,188 stores in 31 states as of May 28, 2005.
