World-renowned fashion designer Nino Cerruti will open the doors of his Italian design house to the talented winner of a new international fashion design award.
Rhee Hye-Rah from Korea took out first prize in the inaugural AWI-Cerruti Fashion Design Competition 2006, announced in Hong Kong at the Intercontinental Hotel on 27 June.
Cerruti recently joined forces with Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to create this exciting new award for budding international fashion students.
The AWI-Cerruti Fashion Design Competition 2006 was open to all full-time or part-time fashion design students from colleges, universities and tertiary institutions in the Asia Pacific region.
The competition gave students the chance to discover first-hand the remarkable qualities of Australian Merino wool - one of the world's most versatile textiles.
Part of the PolyU annual ITC Fashion Awards Show 2006, the competition awarded the winner a cash prize of $AUD5000 and an opportunity to learn from fashion design master Cerruti during work experience at his headquarters in Italy.
Kevin Azzopardi from Australia won $AUD3000 for first runner-up and Cheung Ling from Hong Kong won $AUD2000 as the second runner-up.
AWI provided entrants with super soft, lightweight Merino wool or jersey fabrics to work into an outfit.
Judging was carried out by Nino Cerruti and select fashion design professionals and international fashion experts.
Preliminary judging of the award was conducted on May 8, 2006.
Among the 231 entries, 10 outstanding designs were short-listed for final judging with one finalist from Australia, seven from China (including Hong Kong) and two from Korea.
