What is 'Japanese' Fashion?

The Japan Fashion Week held in Tokyo is coming up in September and the members of the board are very aggressive this year in that the marketing for the event is at large.

They are calling out for buyers all over the world to visit this event and see “Japan's Fashion”.

This Japanese fashion is seemingly other-worldly and is said to be more based on being “cute” than “sexy” like the foreign shows.

Prominent Japanese designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Comme Des Garcon are good examples; the designs are in the world of their own and hold sensations that are different from the European designers.

The Japanese population is more related to the term “cute” than “sexy” or “glamorous”. Kimonos and traditional Japanese outfits display the same image; they are elegant in some ways, but are more in the realm of cute with floral prints, ribbons in the back and floral accessories.

These elements are similar with the Tokyo collection style. Still, the world has yet seen the true “Wa” at these collections. “Wa” is a phrase that defines elegance, subtleness, softness, and a touch of cuteness that blends in harmoniously.

Perhaps the association planning the Japan Fashion Week should go back to the true sense of Japanese beauty in order to increase visitation of buyers from overseas, because at this time of the year, every Japanese falls back in love with “Wa” every year.
